0108 The Effect of Reward Motivation on Placekeeping Performance After Sleep Deprivation

Abstract Introduction Sleep deprivation impairs some higher-order cognitive processes, but this impairment may reflect changes in motivation as well the capacity to perform task, which has implications for intervention strategies. Here, we asked whether reward could offset effects of sleep on placekeeping, a process that is prevalent performance everyday tasks. To conduct study under pandemic conditions, developed method online data collection promises facilitate sleep-deprivation research more generally, by allowing larger and diverse samples be collected at lower cost compared in-person methods. Methods In evening, participants joined Zoom meeting completed Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) placekeeping task (UNRAVEL). Afterwards, were randomly assigned remain stay awake (Deprivation) or leave (Rested). Deprivation monitored remotely overnight two assistants. Rested left 00:00 returned 08:30. At 08:30, all PVT UNRAVEL again. Some had opportunity earn monetary based their morning (Motivated) did not (Nonmotivated). We analyzed with 2 (Sleep: Rested, Deprivation) x (Reward: Motivated, Nonmotivated) design using evening covariate. Results Preliminary results from 206 show errors lapses than participants. Motivated made fewer after interruption Nonmotivated The Reward factors interact. Conclusion These suggest motivational interventions can mitigate complex performance. However, affected similarly rather compensating any specific deprivation. This pattern does rule out an effect motivation, different approach will necessary isolate effect.
